saw elemental yesterday btw and just want to say it was a good film. i enjoyed the animation and the especially the world building. i felt it was kind of weak in a way i can’t pinpoint, but i walked out of the theater thinking that overall it was a good movie, it was just not something i felt any real connection with. im not an immigrant but i do have a soft-spot for child-father relationships, but i still didnt really feel moved by the movie, which is totally fine! i think there is a large audience out there that would love this film and feel really connected. i also think we give pixar films large shoes to fill, especially emotion-wise, and when pixar films don’t make you cry they’re immediately seen as disappointing. but i went into the film with an open mind, no opinions (i purposely didn’t read any reviews) and i tried to give the movie a fair shake. and divorced from pixar’s classics i think it’s a good movie. i just really hope that the under-performance in the box office doesn’t stop people from making movies, particularly children’s movies, with topics of immigration directly from an immigrant director. i can tell there’s a lot of heart and emotion and personal stories behind this film, so i hope that once the movie gets onto disney+ more people will be interested to see it and feel connected with it. also during the movie i was thinking “wow this score is very reminiscent of wall-e !” and i get home and google and it turns out thomas newman scored the film! simply wonderful!!!
